Rated 4.9/5 stars globally, this book is loved worldwide and has been the most well-crafted piece I have ever read, which has not only increased my love of reading but has set me on a new path of interest in mythology. I never believed in falling in love with a book until I picked up this one. If you are looking for a read that will captivate you from start to finish and along the way provoke emotions, thought and connections then The Song of Achilles is the book for you.Patroclus, a young Greek prince, grows up disliked by his father: his mother is intellectually disabled, and his father resents them both for their weakness. From this point on, with shaky hands and teary eyes I finished the book only to want to recommend and blast it everywhere for everyone to read.

Achilles, born a half god is sent off to fight for Phthia in the war, and their bond only strengthens when Patroclus follows. As time passes the burden on Achilles heightens and he is left conflicting between his personal pride and doing the morally right thing. Patroclus sees his struggle and lets his infatuation get in the way of his mind and takes his place as the saviour of the Greeks. As they grow up together on the island, under the watch of the King and the other boys, they find comfort in each other. Set in the 12 th Century BCE, the story is written through the perspective of Patroclus, a prince born in Opus, the story starts when he is banished to Phthia and meets Achilles, saviour of Greeks. The Trojan War was a pinnacle point in Greek mythological history and Madeline Miller managed to capture the emotional essence of this time and create characters with a modern flare as well as portray the struggles of growing up and navigating life through war and grief. Having now read it, I completely agree with her. During the day that it took me to read, I was taken on an emotional rollercoaster, I cried, laughed, sat in shock and fell in love with the author’s writing style and Greek mythology. This book was recommended to me by a friend, who said it was one of the best books she had ever read and could not put it down. The Song of Achilles, a poetically written, heart aching, and memorable story written by Madeline Miller, takes a unique perspective on the ancient Greek Trojan War, and navigates the shift from platonic to romantic relationship between Achilles and Patroclus.
